I can't make it produce the errors you are complaining about. I'm sorry you had difficulties but we do offer online support and usually get back to people in less than 24 hrs. We did a lot of usability studies and worked very hard to make it intuitive.

It has a lot of features you can't find anywhere else.

Alarm three.Īt that point I concluded that the reviewer had meant to type the word "not" in front of the word "intuitive" but didn't proof read correctly.Īm I just a grumpy old man, technically illiterate or just plain daft (or all of the above)? Has anyone else used this software and persevered because I'm in a mind to dump it? That means that I have offended RF and the date format hints will remain on view.

That doesn't work and after about an hour I gave up trying to find out how to do so. So I assumed that you simply click on the offending date and re-type to suit RF - wrong. Rootsfinder however didn't like them at all. It worked for me at the time but years later I changed my software and was required to use a different standard format such as so from that time on I did but I couldn't be bothered to go back over several hundred names and change every date to the new format. When I started my tree about 15 years ago I entered dates as. Reading and removing about 15,000 hints which are mostly red herrings could occupy my remaining years! Second alarm!īut what about the intuitive controls? One set of hints are actually slaps on my wrists relating to date formatting. So I then set about trying to remove hints that are wrong or that I already know about (about 99% of them at first sight) and it seems that you can only do so one at a time. Be very careful to uncheck boxes if you are pretty sure that your ancestors never went to the USA (I should say that I am from England and so are most of my rellies). sources that might match my ancestors from lots of different sites including FMP and FamilySearch- big mistake - I now have over 15,000 hints to wade through. Then I decided to open the tree to "Hints" i.e. It didn't seem to like middle names however, which is a bit annoying when you consider how many people in families have the same first and last names. Eventually a conventional ancestor tree sprang into view. My tree contains some 1,600 names so is not particularly large and uploading was very quick. So I jumped right in and uploaded my gedcom. It was also claimed to be highly intuitive to use. RF got some good reviews and it was claimed to be a fresh, well-designed product that would give Ancestry and other similar online family tree software a run for their money. I have always steered clear of publishing my main tree online but being somewhat reassured by the privacy policies of FMP I decided to have a look.

I am interested to hear if anyone else has used this route to publish online.

The issues would be exactly the same if both computers were Windows PC.I was emailed by findmypast yesterday on the subject of privacy and in the course of reading through I came across their acquisition of this company who provide software and an eponymous website to upload your family tree to.

So in summary, the issues of migrating a GEDCOM and Media files from FTM to FH are unaffected by the involvement of Apple Mac and Windows PC. Thus the data structures can be interpreted correctly, and there are only relatively small differences anyway. It would be fairly easy for them to be compliant with both, because the file header identifies which version is in force. If every product was fully compliant with both Release 5.5 and Draft 5.5.1 then migration would be so much easier. Many other products such as FTM claim compliance with Draft 5.5.1 and the FTM committent is a welcome improvement that will make importing into FH much easier. FH is compliant with Release 5.5 and offers some support for Draft 5.5.1. That deals with how the family tree data is represented in records and tags.
